Best things to do in

OBAN

McCaig’s Tower

Perched above Oban overlooking the bay, McCaig’s Tower is one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks and one of the best viewpoints on Scotland’s west coast.

Inspired by the Roman Colosseum, the striking circular structure sits high above the harbour, offering panoramic bay views across Oban, Kerrera, Mull and the surrounding islands. Originally commissioned in the late 1800s by local banker John Stuart McCaig, the monument has become synonymous with the town itself.

The walk to the tower is short but steep in places, rewarding visitors with one of the most dramatic vantage points in Argyll & Bute. Whether visiting during the day or in the evening, the ever-changing light across the sea and mountains makes it a favourite location for photographers and visitors alike.

McCaig’s Tower is particularly special at sunrise, when the first light breaks across Oban Bay and the surrounding hills. Golden hour brings warm tones across the stone arches and waterfront below, while blue hour transforms the harbour into a softer, atmospheric scene as the town lights begin to reflect across the water.

For photography, quiet reflection, or simply taking in the scale of Scotland’s west coast, McCaig’s Tower remains an essential stop when visiting Oban.

Wildlife Boat Tours

The west coast of Scotland is widely regarded as one of the best wildlife regions in Europe, with the waters surrounding Oban offering extraordinary opportunities to experience marine life in its natural environment.

Boat tours departing from Oban regularly encounter dolphins, seals and porpoises, while seasonal trips can also reveal puffins nesting along dramatic coastal cliffs and islands. The region is also one of the best places in the UK to witness the majestic white-tailed sea eagle soaring above the coastline.

Depending on the season and sea conditions, visitors may also be fortunate enough to spot whales migrating through the Hebridean waters — an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Scotland’s rugged west coast scenery.

Tours range from shorter coastal wildlife cruises to full-day island adventures, combining breathtaking landscapes, remote beaches, volcanic islands and some of the richest marine ecosystems in the country.

Whether you are a photographer, wildlife enthusiast, or simply looking to experience the Highlands from the water, a wildlife boat tour is one of the most memorable experiences available during your stay at The Etive Estate.
